CPL Home

CPL holders shall not carry a concealed pistol on any of the following premises:

  • Schools or school property except that a parent or legal guardian of a student of the school is not precluded from carrying a concealed pistol while in a vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking up the student from school
  • Public or private day care center, child caring agency or child placing agency
  • Sports arena or stadium
  • Bar or tavern licensed under the Michigan Liquor Control Act where the primary source of income of the business is the sale of alcohol by the glass and consumed on the premises.  This prohibition does not apply to the owner or employee of the business
  • Any property or facility owned or operated by a church, synagogue, mosque, temple or other place of worship unless the presiding official or officials permit the carrying on that property or facility
  • An entertainment facility that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more
  • A hospital
  • A dormitory or classroom of a community college, college or university

“Premises” does not include the parking areas of the places listed above.

A pistol is subject to immediate seizure if the CPL holder is carrying a pistol in a prohibited area.  The following penalties may also be imposed:

  • First Offense – State Civil Infraction, $500.00 fine, license suspended 6 months
  • Second Offense – Misdemeanor, 90 days jail, $1,000.00 fine, license revoked
  • Third Offense – Felony, 4 years prison, $5,000.00 fine, license revoked

The Gaming Control and Revenue Act prohibits the carrying of a pistol in casinos. The Michigan Supreme Court also prohibits the carrying of a pistol in any courtroom, office or other space used for official court business unless approved by the Chief Judge.

Reciprocity - An individual licensed to carry a concealed pistol in Michigan can carry in another State only if the State recognizes the Michigan license.  Currently, 34 states recognize concealed pistol licenses issued in Michigan.  However, the CPL holder who wishes to carry in another state must also comply with the
