The Public Health Preparedness Division at the Monroe County Health Department has created an emergency preparedness calendar for the year 2010 for residents in Monroe County. This calendar aims to provide residents the knowledge to prepare and handle any emergency Monroe County might face. Additionally, the calendar will guide you throughout the year in creating an all-inclusive emergency kit for your home.
How to use the calendar:
· The calendar is to be used from January – December 2010.
· Each week there is a new, brief, lesson. The title for each week appears on the calendar on Sundays. The actual lessons are posted online as pdf files
(by month in the box above) and hard copies can also be picked up during the appropraite month at the Monroe County Health Department:
2353 S. Custer Rd. Monroe, MI 48161
· Every lesson will provide information on a different emergency situation and will give you suggestions of new materials to add to your emergency kit. The recommendations will be per one person, so if you live with others you will need to multiply the supplies by the number of persons in the household. For example, if the recommendation is to have 3 gallons of water on hand, a family of 4 would need 12 gallons.
· For families we recommend working through the lessons together so that everyone in the family understands and knows what to do in each situation.
· If you do not have an emergency kit you might want to buy a simple backpack or duffle back (depending on the size of your household) to start out with. This way you have something easy to pack with your emergency supplies, and it will be easy to grab and/or transport in a real emergency.
· Have fun and learn something new!
If you don’t want to (or don’t have time to) make your own emergency kit:
Online there are many options for pre-made kits. They come in all different sizes and can be basic to very sophisticated. You can also purchase a kit based on the size of your family. The following websites are just a couple of examples (Note: The Monroe County Health Department does not work with or support these organizations. The Health Department is not liable for purchases or claims made with these outside organizations. This information is simply to help guide your search.)
