MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS
The Monroe County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) provides dedicated health care professionals and citizens of the County the opportunity to volunteer their time and expertise. The MRC is housed within the Emergency Preparedness Division at the Monroe County Health Department (MCHD). Monroe County’s MRC joins the other 997+ MRC units nationwide.
The purpose of Monroe County’s MRC unit is to provide assistance to local responders during public health emergencies. In emergency situations it is paramount to have enough skilled medical personnel assisting in the protection of the entire community. For example, if vaccines or other prophylactic measures are needed, Monroe County’s MRC unit will support existing systems for emergency response and expand MCHD’s capacity to protect the public’s health.
The MRC is looking for volunteers to fill both health professional and non-medical support roles. Examples include:
- Physician Assistants
- Emergency Medical Technicians
- Mental Health Professionals
- Social Workers
- Interested community members without backgrounds in health care
A volunteer’s role within the MRC will be based upon their occupation and experience. Volunteers should be at least 18 years of age.
As a volunteer:
- You will receive free training in emergency preparedness and will be given the opportunity to participate in drills and exercises.
- You will be able to use your knowledge and expertise to support the community where you live and/or work
Upon joining the MRC, new members will have a short orientation that will introduce them to emergency preparedness and response, as well as how the MRC will benefit Monroe County. Additional training and participation in drills and exercises will also be available for volunteers. Volunteers may be involved as much or as little as they would like, since there is no requirement for the amount of volunteer participation.
