The importance of workplace preparedness is growing. Businesses can be crippled by natural disasters, technological crises, and the terrorism. So what can you do?

  1. Assess the risks your workplace faces. To help you start, the Monroe County Emergency Management Department has conducted a county hazard analysis.
  2. Make a plan that encompasses a variety of possible disaster scenarios. For instance, you may need to evacuate or shelter in place (plan for up to 3 days).
  3. Write your plan down, distribute it to and discuss it with all employees.
  4. Create a communications plan to communicate with employees at work, home, or off-site. You will want to multiple ways to communicate, including work extension, home, cell, and pager numbers. Carry a copy with you.
  5. Have experts critique your plan and revise it as necessary. The Monroe County Emergency Management Department can help with your preparedness planning. Call (734) 240-3135 to request assistance.
  6. Establish regular drills to practice your plan so that enacting it becomes automatic.
  7. Review and revise your plan on a regular schedule to keep it updated.
