HomeGovernmentDepartments / OfficesYouth Center > Project  Second Chance

"Project Second Chance pairs youths from the Youth Center with abandoned dogs from Monroe County Animal Shelter to give them a second chance.  The program encourages the youth to develop empathy for animals (historically, often victims of youth hostility or criminal behaviors). Once developed, this empathy can be transferred/shared toward others in the youths’ lives (siblings, peers, parents, children, community, and SELF) who have received all too little such gentle attention.  The youth are responsible for the care, grooming, and training of the dogs.  Combined with therapy, the results are a win, win, win: a more compassionate and responsible youth, a desirable dog for adoption, and a safer community."
