Record Availability

All indexes for Monroe County are maintained in a secure area.

Deaths start in the year 1867.

Marriages start in the year 1818.

Births start in the year 1874, but are confidential records, except for birth records 110 or more years old, which are available to the public. A search for specific records will be made by the Clerk's staff upon written request. Proof of requestor's eligibility to receive a birth record and a current valid driver's license or state-issued identification card will be required.

Naturalization indexes/records up to 1929 are available for inspection at the Michigan Library and Historical Center in Lansing, 517-373-1408.

From 1929 to 1982 the indexes/petitions are located in Monroe County Clerks Office.

After 1982 you must go to Immigration and Naturalization, Detroit, MI.

Regulations

Indexes and records are governed by statute. This office will immediately address any suspected misuse of indexes/records.

  • No in person research is allowed
  • You may request records via email, U.S. mail, or in person. Please see Fee Schedule for pricing and instructions
  • No indexes/records may be removed from the genealogy area except by the Clerk's staff
  • Mutilation or destruction of any indexes/records is punishable by fine or imprisonment
