Hearing & Vision
The Hearing and Vision program provides hearing and vision screenings for preschool and school age children. All Monroe County School Districts work in partnership with Monroe County Health Department to provide hearing and vision screening throughout a child's school years. Children are screened in school according to the following schedule:
- Hearing: Preschool and grades K, 2 and 4
- Vision: Preschool and grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9
In addition to school screenings, free hearing and vision screenings are available at the Monroe County Health Department. Call 734-240-7856 for an appointment or for any questions about hearing and vision screenings.

Important Information Regarding Kindergarten Screenings
School Code and Kindergarten Enrollment Requirement:
In accordance with the Revised School Code (Act 451 of 1976, section 380.1177), parents of incoming kindergarten students must fulfill specific vision and hearing screening requirements before enrolling their child in school.
Hearing and Vision Screening for Kindergarten Entry:
To enroll in kindergarten, all incoming students must undergo hearing and vision screening. Pre-K students will receive these screenings in the spring at their respective sites, administered by the Health Department. This satisfies the kindergarten entry requirement. However, if a child is absent on the screening day or is not enrolled in a childcare or preschool program before entering kindergarten, parents can arrange a screening appointment by contacting the Health Department at 734-240-7856.
Vision Screening Documentation:
Parents have two options for vision screening documentation:
- Provide a statement confirming that their child has received a Vision Screening from the Monroe County Health Department.
- Present a statement signed by a licensed eye care practitioner or medical/osteopathic physician (optometrist or ophthalmologist), indicating that their child's eyes have been examined at least once after the age of three and before initial school entry.
Data Entry Requirement:
School officials are mandated to enter vision screening data into the MCIR/SIRS system for all incoming kindergarten students by November 1 of each year.
